Abstract

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST) is a rare and potentally deadly conditon. Common etologies include hypercoagulable diseases, low fow states, dehydraton, adjacent infectous processes, oral contraceptves, hormonal replacement therapy, pregnancy, and puerpenium. Symptoms include nausea, seizures, severe focal neurological defcits, coma, and headache (the most common presentng symptom). Antcoagulaton is the mainstay of treatment for CVST.The objectve of study is to describe the features of a series of patent with CVST treated in Natonal Neurosurgical Referral Center and to discuss the risk factors, presentaton, and outcome of the disease process. The study is a retrospectve study which was carried out at Natonal Neurosurgical Referral Center, Natonal Academy of Medical Sciences, during the year September 2008 to September 2009 (1year). Demographic features like age, sex were analyzed.12 Patents were identfed over a period of 1 year. The presentng symptoms include headache (11 patents), vomitng (6 patents), loss of consciousness (5 patents), focal neurological defcit (3 patents), seizure (3 patents) and neck pain (1 patents). Signs found included papilloedema   (4 patents), fever (2 patents), slurring of speech (1 patents) and focal neurological signs   (2 patents). The most common underlying conditon was dehydraton and use of estrogen containing contraceptves. All cases received heparin or LMWH followed by Warfarin. One patent who had CVST associated with pituitary adenoma died.Key Words : Cerebral Venous sinus Thrombosis (CVST), Heparin
